Tertiary air is the third stage of a stove's combustion air supply, alongside the primary air that feeds the base of the fire and the secondary air used for the glass air-wash. The tertiary air bar introduces a further metered stream of air higher up in the firebox, where it helps burn off unburnt gases and fine particulates from the fire before they pass into the flue. This is a key part of how modern multi-fuel and wood-burning stoves achieve cleaner, more efficient combustion rather than simply venting partially-burnt smoke. Like other components exposed to direct heat and combustion gases, the bar can warp, corrode or have its air holes gradually clog with soot and ash over years of use, which reduces its effectiveness and is worth checking during a service.
