It’s one of the most common questions we get asked when end users call us directly or pop into our showroom, and it's the most common question our retailers get. Getting it wrong can make a huge difference to comfort, efficiency, and running costs.
Too small? Your room never quite warms up. Too big? You’ll be opening windows in winter and running your stove inefficiently.
The good news: there’s a simple way to work it out
📏 The basic formula:
Room Length × Room Width × Room Height ÷ 14 = Required kW output
For example: A 5m × 4m room with a 2.4m ceiling = ~3.4kW ➡️ You’d typically look at a 4–5kW stove
🏡 Quick guide for sizings
-
Small rooms: 3–4kW
-
Standard living rooms: 4–5kW
-
Larger spaces: 5–7kW
-
Open-plan areas: 8kW+
⚠️ But here’s what many people miss…
Your home’s insulation matters just as much as the room size.
✔️ New build / well insulated? You may need less heat ✔️ Older / draughty property? You may need more.
And a common myth worth busting: 👉 Bigger isn’t better
Oversized stoves are often less efficient, harder to control, and can lead to poor burning conditions.
